The whole purpose of your vehicle’s suspension system is to make your trip down the road more comfortable.

The benefits of suspension lift kits include improved ground clearance, enhanced off-road performance, superior handling, increased load capacity, better ride comfort, and greater safety. For 4WD owners tackling Australia’s diverse terrain, these upgrades offer practical advantages on and off the road.

1. Ground Clearance Boost

Suspension lift kits raise your 4WD’s chassis by 25–75 mm, offering vital ground clearance over rocky outcrops, deep ruts and creek crossings. In WA’s rugged bush tracks, that extra ride height prevents bash damage to your sump, chassis rails and exhaust. For instance, I tackled John Forrest National Park trails without underbody scrapes after a 50 mm lift upgrade. When selecting a kit, consider whether a spacer lift or full suspension package suits your driving style and load requirements. It’s wise to measure your stock tyre-to-arch gap before fitting, then re-measure afterwards to confirm clearance improvements. Pairing a lift kit with matching tyre and wheel offsets ensures balanced handling.

2. Off-Road Performance

By lifting your suspension, you unlock far superior off-road capability. Higher travel allows each wheel to articulate over dips and hollows, keeping tyres planted on uneven surfaces. During a recent River Road trip in Cape Range National Park, the improved articulation from a 60 mm lift kit kept my wheels firmly on jagged limestone, reducing bounce and preventing wheel hop. To get maximum benefit, pair a lift kit with heavy-duty adjustable shock absorbers that fine-tune rebound and compression rates. A tip is to adjust damping settings before heading off-road, tailoring suspension response to sand, gravel or rocky terrain. Ensuring your suspension travel matches tyre size is crucial; oversized tyres without adequate lift can lead to rubbing inside the guard.

3. Enhanced Handling

Suspension lift kits also deliver noticeably enhanced handling on varied surfaces. By increasing roll stiffness and improving shock absorption, these kits reduce body lean during cornering. On Great Eastern Highway outside Perth, I experienced firmer, more predictable handling after fitting monotube remote-reservoir shocks with my lift kit. A precise spring rate matched to your vehicle’s weight ensures the suspension responds sharply to steering inputs without feeling harsh. One tip is to request a customised spring rate based on your typical load or accessory setup, such as roof racks or winches. Fine-tuning sway bar links and end-links further minimises body roll, so you can tackle winding country roads and city streets with equal ease.

4. Increased Load Capacity

Increasing your vehicle’s load capacity is another key benefit of suspension lift kits. Stronger springs and heavy-duty shocks support additional accessories or cargo without sagging. For instance, when hauling camping gear and fuel drums to Karijini National Park, my upgraded suspension maintained a level stance even under 400 kg of extras. To optimise load capacity, consider GVM-rated spring packs that match your intended payload. A useful tip is to calculate your total accessory weight—including roof racks and bull bars—then choose a kit with a 20 per cent buffer. This ensures your 4WD remains balanced and safe under full load while maintaining proper tyre contact and braking performance.

5. Ride Comfort

Suspension lift kits do more than boost performance; they also enhance ride comfort. Upgraded dampers absorb road chatter and smooth out corrugations, turning a jarring journey on the Gibb River Road into a more comfortable experience. After installing adjustable remote-reservoir shocks, I noticed less cabin vibration and reduced fatigue on long drives to Dampier. For the best result, select shock absorbers with adjustable rebound and compression settings so you can tune firmness for loaded or unloaded conditions. Stiffen compression when fully loaded and soften rebound on light runs. Properly tuned suspension prevents rapid oscillation after bumps, maintaining wheel contact and passenger comfort.

6. Safety Improvements

Safety improvements from suspension lift kits extend beyond clearance. A lift increases visibility, letting you spot obstacles or wildlife earlier on remote WA roads. Higher stance also reduces the risk of underbody snagging, which can lead to sudden loss of control. I’ve reacted in time to kangaroos on Eyre Highway thanks to that elevated vantage. Furthermore, upgraded suspension components maintain tyre contact and braking efficiency during emergency manoeuvres. A practical tip is to check brake-line extensions and ABS sensor wires after lifting, ensuring safety systems operate without restriction. Regular inspections of mounting points and sway bar end-links also prevent component failure.

7. Component Longevity

Investing in quality suspension lift kits also extends component lifespan. Aftermarket springs and shocks are engineered to withstand heavier loads and harsher terrain, reducing wear compared to stock components. In my experience replacing factory struts every three years, upgraded coil-over shocks have lasted over five years with minimal maintenance. This longevity lowers running costs by delaying replacements. To maximise component life, opt for corrosion-resistant materials and regularly clean seals and mounts after muddy trips. A maintenance tip is to apply a light spray of silicone lubricant to bushings and pivot points, preventing grime build-up and premature wear.

8. Custom Aesthetics

Beyond performance, suspension lift kits transform your 4WD’s appearance. A well-proportioned lift combined with larger tyres creates a commanding, rugged stance that turns heads at The Esplanade in Fremantle. Many off-roaders fit matte-black shocks and coloured coil springs to match accessories, personalising their vehicle’s look. When selecting colours, consider contrasting hues with your bodywork and wheel trim for a cohesive finish. One tip is to view completed builds at local off-road meet-ups, noting paint codes and tyre sizes you admire. Upsized wheels may require flares or minor guard modifications, so factor that into your aesthetic plan.

Signs You Should Upgrade Your Suspension

Sagging In The Rear

The clearest indicator of a faulty 4×4 suspension is sagging in the back of the vehicle when loading and transporting heavy loads. This drooping results in increased wear on the vehicle’s mechanical components reduced road steadiness, and, as a result, reduced travel safety.

Unnerving Turns

Another warning indication that you need to upgrade your suspension is when cornering. Ensure that you do not feel like the vehicle is drifting or being pushed. When the car’s suspension cannot protect the vehicle from the impacts of centrifugal force, this occurs. Centrifugal force takes effect when you try to maneuver the car into or out of turn in the turn direction. This is a significant issue and a risk to your safety. You should replace the suspension on your vehicle as soon as possible if you notice this.

Suspension Overload

If your current suspension system has been installed on the rig for a prolonged period than other 4×4 components, you need to rethink its possibilities. To ensure that your suspension performs as efficiently as possible, you should ensure it is installed with your other items’ weight and load-bearing capacity in mind. As a result, you are highly recommended to update the suspension after or at the same time as adding extras such as canopies, bull bars, drawers, etc.

Nose Diving

If your 4WD suspension system is worn out, you may experience nose-diving. If you slam on the brakes hard to avoid an accident, this condition will increase and become more dangerous. Because nose-diving limits the vehicle’s ability to stop within the required distance, it substantially impacts safety. The effect of nose-diving reduces the time it takes for the vehicle to stop by 20%. If you notice that your vehicle has such conditions, do not hesitate to have the suspensions checked and replaced.

Bumpy Rides

A rough car is another indicator of a degraded 4×4 suspension system. If all of the dings and little bumps on the road start to stick inside the cabin, the suspension system is fundamentally defective and needs to be corrected. In most cases, this indicates that the piston-cylinder assembly of the suspension shock absorber is worn out and has to be replaced. On the other hand, this bumpy ride could be due to strut damage. Therefore you should thoroughly inspect your vehicle’s suspension system.

Steering Difficulties

If the car’s handling isn’t working at low speeds, there’s a problem with the suspension system. This could make the steering seem stiff, or the automobile could skid and pull to one side or the other. This could be anything as easy as a lack of steering fluid or a sign of some other vehicle issue.

The Vehicle Leans When Parked

When you park your vehicle, you assume the ground to be flat and level. If you observe a significant lean on one tire at a corner, the suspension at that spot is probably faulty. The front or rear wheel suspension may also need to be modified if the car is leaning forward or backward. The most obvious approach is to check the clearance between the tire and the wheel arch body. It should be the same throughout the car.

Squeaking And Knocking Noises

The creaking and rattling noises you hear from under your vehicle may result from a defective suspension component. Suspension bushings, for example, ensure that the suspension’s moving parts work smoothly together. The system “plays” as these bushings degenerate, allowing loose bits to rattle back and forth as you drive. This indicates that your 4×4 suspension needs servicing or an upgrade. When you use damaged suspension bushings and tie rods for extended periods, you may be putting other suspension system parts under additional stress.
