2. Pacemaker

Pacemaker is another staple in the lineup of the best exhaust systems. For over 50 years, Pacemaker has been a true pioneer in the exhaust upgrade industry. Pacemaker’s biggest claim to fame was their introduction of mandrel-bending technology into exhaust headers.

They also pioneered Pipe Over Cone™ technology. By incorporating this technology into their headers, turbulence is reduced and gas flow is increased. This results in noticeably higher horsepower and improved overall performance.

Strengths of Pacemaker exhaust systems:

  • Made from high-quality, durable materials such as 409 stainless steel
  • Known for their excellent sound, with deep, raspy, rumbling tones that are distinct and noisy without being overpowering
  • Feature exhaust systems with reduced exhaust gas temperatures to ensure efficiency and maximum engine longevity
  • Noticeable gains in horsepower thanks to improved exhaust gas flow and reduced turbulence

Established in 1981, Genie has a long-standing reputation as one of the best exhaust system brands in Australia. With its strong reputation and commitment to innovation, I always feel comfortable recommending Genie as one of the best exhaust systems.

Strengths of Genie exhausts:

Since 1979, Redback has been known for providing some of the most durable, high-performance exhaust systems. One of my favourite features of Redback is the various interchangeable sound options. This allows 4×4 owners to easily customise their vehicle’s sound according to their preferences.

Redback also utilises electric mandrel benders. This ensures a more precise, accurate bend compared to standard hydraulic machines. The result is exceptional performance and a superior fit.

Strengths of Redback exhaust systems:

  • Manufactured right in Melbourne
  • Impeccable craftsmanship and commitment to quality
  • Robust construction, including pressed tube support brackets and doubled-wrapped hanger mounts for unmatched durability
  • Various exhaust system types are available, including cat-back, extreme duty 4×4, and cat-and-pipe to cater to 4×4 enthusiasts

XForce is another one of the best performance exhaust systems in Australia. Known for innovative designs and boundary-pushing technology, XFORCE is one of my personal favourites.

XForce is best known for its VAREX® muffler technology, which enables a fully customisable sound. Whether you prefer a subtle, more refined note or a beefier, more aggressive sound, the valves can be adjusted to your exact sound preference.

Strengths of XForce exhaust systems:

  • Known for their aggressive, sporty look and stylish features, such as dual or quad tips
  • Provide a significant increase in exhaust flow and noticeable power improvements
  • Highly customisable sound thanks to VAREX® technology — perfect for 4×4 enthusiasts seeking a distinct sound

  • High-quality construction, including durable 304 stainless steel

Things to Consider Before You Upgrade

Once you decide on the best exhaust brand for your needs, make sure to keep these considerations in mind:

  • Exhaust Type: Cat-back, turbo-back, and axle-back are the main exhaust types. I often recommend cat-back exhaust systems as they generally comply with Australia’s noise and emission regulations. Cat-back exhaust systems also offer excellent performance gains.

I go more in-depth about the pros and cons of exhaust types in my guide here: Do Aftermarket Exhausts Improve Performance Significantly?

  • Compatibility: Make sure your exhaust upgrade is compatible with the make, model, and year of your vehicle.
  • Exhaust Pipe Thickness: For off-roading enthusiasts, I recommend a thicker exhaust pipe, especially if you do a lot of off-roading. A higher quality, thicker exhaust pipe is better equipped to handle the harsh terrain and temperature swings that often come with off-road adventures.

A thicker exhaust pipe also creates a beefier, deeper exhaust note as opposed to that high-pitched, tinny sound from thinner pipes.

  • Quality: The underside of your 4×4 is constantly battling vibrations, heat, moisture, and rough terrain. These conditions can take a toll over time and lead to damage. I recommend a quality stainless steel exhaust system for maximum performance and longevity.
  • Legal Concerns: Double-check to ensure any exhaust upgrades you are interested in comply with local regulations.
  • Warranty: Before completing an exhaust upgrade, check if it will impact your vehicle’s warranty.

FAQs

Are exhaust upgrades worth it?

I would say exhaust upgrades are generally worth it as long as you understand the limitations of them. If a power boost is your biggest priority, you may want to combine an exhaust upgrade with dyno tuning or custom ECU mapping.

If you want a more refined, distinct sound and a battery quality exhaust system, an exhaust upgrade may be ideal for you. You can also expect higher torque and better fuel economy.

Does upgrading your exhaust increase horsepower?

Yes, an exhaust upgrade can increase horsepower and boost overall performance. By enabling better air intake and airflow, exhaust upgrades can boost horsepower and torque.

For added performance gains, I recommend complementing your exhaust upgrade with custom ECU remapping.

Does upgrading your exhaust void the warranty?

Yes, an exhaust upgrade can void a vehicle’s warranty. I recommend double-checking how an exhaust upgrade may affect your vehicle’s coverage and warranty. If you need help navigating exhaust upgrade regulations, our team is happy to help.
