Alex looking at a warranty document relating to dyno tuning

No, dyno tuning does not automatically void a 4WD’s warranty. However, there are certain instances where dyno tuning can affect a warranty claim.

I’ve been focusing on dynos in recent blogs because of their proven ability to boost horsepower, torque, and efficiency. Dynos have been my go-to modification for decades, so I know it’s common for owners to worry about the warranty.

I’m always glad when a customer checks, “Does dyno tuning void warranty?” before a tune. I want my customers to be well-informed and aware of their protections under Australia’s Consumer Law.

Here’s what you need to know about dyno tuning so you can upgrade your 4WD’s performance without compromising its warranty.

How Dyno Tuning Affects Your Warranty

So you want the benefits of dyno tuning but are worried about the warranty. The good news is that dyno tuning doesn’t automatically void your warranty. Still, there are important details to know before you schedule your dyno tune.

Here’s what I make sure my customers know regarding “Does dyno tune void warranty?”:

  • The Australian Consumer Law (ACL) dictates that manufacturers and dealers cannot void warranty coverage just because of dyno tuning
  • These rights, also called consumer guarantees, ensure that your warranty cannot be automatically voided just because of a modification
  • A dealer can only refuse your warranty if they can prove that the dyno tuning caused the issue
  • If there is proven evidence the dyno tune caused the issue in question, the claim can be denied
  • The burden of proof lies solely with the dealer or manufacturer

When Does a Dyno Tune Void a Warranty?

A manufacturer or dealer is not allowed to simply refuse your warranty coverage due to dyno tuning.

Because of the Australian Consumer Law, a dealer must have evidence that the damage was a direct result of dyno tuning. Without proof, the dealer cannot refuse warranty coverage.

Here are a couple of example scenarios to demonstrate your protections under the ACL:

Dyno Tuning Warranty Claim Legally Denied

Sam modifies his Land Cruiser on his own, pushing far past the engine’s factory-specific limits. His DIY dyno tune results in soaring exhaust gas temps, melted pistons, and engine failure.

Sam brings his Land Cruiser back to the dealer where he purchased it 3 months ago to file a warranty claim. Upon inspection, the dealer finds the ECU was far beyond its safe control limits.

The dealer provides evidence that the fuel ratios, boost, and other parameters caused increased stress on components, leading to the failure. Since the dyno tune was non-compliant, the dealer can legally deny Sam’s claim. He is stuck with a pricey repair bill and is fully responsible for covering any repairs.

Dyno Tuning Warranty Protected

Bill regularly goes off-roading in his Land Cruiser and tows a large caravan packed with gear. He wants better driveability and towing power, so he schedules a dyno tune with a reputable expert.

Bill’s drivetrain goes out 4 months later, and he files a claim. He provides documentation of the dyno tune, service receipts, and all related documentation.

Under the ACL, the manufacturer cannot simply deny the claim because of the dyno tuning. There is no proven link that the dyno tune affected the drivetrain, so Bill’s warranty claim is honoured.

How to Protect Your Warranty If You Choose Dyno Tuning

Protect your 4×4’s longevity and warranty with these tips:

Save All Documentation and Paperwork

My biggest recommendation for protecting your warranty if you get a dyno tune is to save all the pertinent documentation.

This reduces your risk of disputes over the warranty. Save work history receipts, repair invoices, dyno tune logs, calibration files, and any other related paperwork.

Choose a Reputable 4WD Modification Expert

My other biggest recommendation is working with a respected dyno tuning expert. Reputable tuners have the experience to upgrade your 4×4’s performance while keeping safe emission levels and engine components in mind.

At Elite Tune, we always ensure our upgrades are compliant and safe for your vehicle and engine. We provide details of the tune so you have clear documentation in the event of a warranty claim. We also ensure compliance with all emissions standards. Our tunes are customised for your vehicle and local conditions, ensuring results complement your 4×4 rather than compromise it.

Respect Your 4×4’s Limits

Don’t be tempted to max out power gains at the expense of your engine. Disabling emissions systems or pushing beyond factory limits risks component failure and voided warranties.

When I’m dyno tuning, I aim to work with a vehicle’s engine, not against it. This approach ensures maximum power and performance gains without the risks of denied claims or damage.

Schedule Regular Maintenance and Servicing

Make sure you have your 4×4 regularly serviced. Shorten the service window if you regularly push your 4WD to its limits by towing heavy loads or driving in harsh off-road conditions.

Keep up with preventative maintenance, such as monitoring fluids, and save receipts for parts, repairs, and servicing. If you do need to file a claim, dealers pay close attention to service records.
