80 Series high flow turbo kit

To upgrade a turbo correctly, select a properly sized performance turbo, install supporting modifications like an intercooler, upgraded fuel system, and enhanced cooling, use high-grade components, and perform custom ECU remapping. But there’s a lot more to the process to make sure you get the best result from a turbo upgrade

After 2 decades of modifying diesel engines, I’ve perfected how to upgrade a turbo for the best results. If your factory-fitted turbo is falling short, here’s a simple guide on how to upgrade a turbo. I’ve filled this guide with tips so you can avoid the mistakes I’ve seen other drivers make over the years.

Quick Guide to Upgrading a Turbo

  • How-To: Upgrade turbo with proper sizing, supporting mods (intercooler, fuel, cooling), premium parts, ECU remap for max power/reliability.
  • Benefits: 30%+ power, reduced lag, better fuel economy, towing ease, durability.
  • Considerations: Research complements, high-grade components, ideal sizing; avoid rushing to prevent failures.
  • Tools: Fuel upgrades, lines, hardware, tuning tools, general mechanics kit.

Considerations Before Upgrading Your 4×4 Turbo

Rushing into a turbo upgrade can leave you with disappointing performance or excessive wear and tear on your engine. Here are the top 3 considerations I recommend before a turbo upgrade.

Tip #1: Don’t Skip Complementary Modifications

The biggest advice I have for drivers who want to know how to upgrade a turbo is researching complementary modifications. Upgrading a turbocharger without considering the engine as a whole can come at the cost of reliability and worn out parts.

I’ve seen drivers rush into turbo modifications and only focus on the turbo upgrade kit. Skipping out on supporting mods can result in serious complications, overheating, and engine failure.

A well-rounded turbo upgrade will consider the components needed to handle additional pressure, power, and heat. This will protect the engine components while also ensuring maximum power boost and the best results

Tip #2: Choose High-Grade Components

I’ve had plenty of drivers come in for help fixing a substandard turbo upgrade. Owners are often tempted to go for cheaper parts to cut down on the cost of a turbo upgrade. This usually backfires in the form of worn out engine components, disappointing performance, or lack of power boost.

At Elite Tune, we only carry the highest-grade components from respected industry brands. By opting for premium-grade parts, you can expect the highest power boost and best reliability.

Tip #3: Ensure Ideal Turbo Sizing

Sizing is another one of the most important considerations to get right. An undersized turbo will fail to get you the performance and power gains you’re seeking. An oversized turbocharger can result in turbo lag and unnecessary stress on engine parts.

I had a driver come in recently who had installed a massive turbocharger on his Land Cruiser. It was severely oversized, resulting in overheating and excessive turbo lag.

I installed a properly sized turbocharger and completed custom ECU remapping. The driver was shocked when the ‘smaller’ turbocharger offered him significantly higher horsepower than the oversized kit he had installed.

Working with a mod expert ensures you get an appropriately sized turbo for your 4×4, driving goals, and power goals.

How to Upgrade a Turbo

1. Removing old components

Such as the stock turbocharger. I always start by safely draining coolant and oil to avoid mess or contamination. Disconnect the exhaust downpipe, intake piping, and manifolds, then carefully unbolt the factory turbo—paying close attention to fragile oil feed/return lines. Once removed, I thoroughly clean the mounting flanges and inspect for wear on gaskets or studs. Skipping this prep is how I’ve seen drivers end up with oil leaks or boost issues right from the start.

2. Installing the performance turbo

With the area spotless, bolt the new performance turbo into position using high-temp hardware. Reconnect all lines, manifolds, and the wastegate actuator, torquing everything to manufacturer specs—I’ve learned the hard way that overtightening warps housings. Double-check alignment to prevent exhaust leaks; a proper fit here is what delivers that instant power spike without drama.

3. Installing complementary systems to handle the power increase

Such as an intercooler or upgraded fuel components. No turbo upgrade survives without supporting mods. I fit a larger front-mount intercooler for denser air, swap to high-flow fuel injectors and a bigger pump, plus reinforced fuel lines. For big boosts, upgraded clutch or transmission cooling might come in too. I’ve fixed countless blown engines from drivers who bolted on a turbo alone—this step protects your investment and unlocks the full 30%+ power gain.

4. Ensuring proper cooling and lubrication

Turbo life depends on this. I install braided oil feed/return lines with restrictors, upgrade coolant hoses, and often add an oil catch can or auxiliary cooler. Before firing up, I prime the turbo with oil by hand to avoid dry starts. In Perth’s heat, I’ve seen neglected cooling lead to bearing failure in weeks—get this right, and your turbo will outlast the truck.

5. Custom ECU remapping

To optimise the new turbo setup and maximise performance and longevity. This is non-negotiable in my shop. Using professional tuning tools, I remap boost curves, fuel delivery, ignition timing, and air-fuel ratios to match the new setup. It eliminates rich/lean spots, controls EGTs, and ensures smooth power delivery. Drivers who skip this get surge, detonation, or limp mode—I always tune on the dyno for real-world gains and engine safety.

Tools and Equipment Needed for a Turbo Upgrade

Along with your aftermarket turbocharger kit, a turbo upgrade will require a variety of tools and specialty equipment.

This isn’t a definitive list, but here are some examples of turbo upgrade tools and equipment you’ll need:

  • Upgraded fuel system components, such as a high-flow fuel pump, upgraded fuel lines, and bigger fuel injectors
  • Appropriate lubrication and cooling lines
  • High-temperature hardware
  • ECU tuning tools
  • General tools, such as a complete set of sockets and wrenches, screwdrivers, jack and jack stands, gasket scraper, drain pans, safety glasses, etc.

5 Benefits of Upgrading Your 4×4 Turbo

1. Power Gains and Performance Boost

The most popular reason for upgrading a turbocharger is the power boost it can provide. A performance turbo forces more air into the combustion chamber, creating more power, torque, and performance.

The increased performance offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Faster acceleration
  • Improved responsiveness
  • A spike in horsepower
  • Improved engine efficiency

2. Reduced Turbo Lag

A lot of drivers ask about a performance turbocharger because they are frustrated with delayed throttle response. This delayed throttle response, also known as turbo lag, is a great reason to consider a turbo upgrade.

Factory turbos often experience turbo lag, especially if you do a lot of urban driving. A performance turbo improves combustion efficiency and increases horsepower to reduce turbo lag.

3. Improved Fuel Economy

Drivers are usually surprised when I tell them a proper turbo upgrade can improve fuel economy. The right turbo upgrade can help your 4×4 utilise fuel more efficiently, reducing fuel costs while still increasing power.

4. Enhanced Towing Capabilities

A turbo upgrade can add much-needed power and torque for improved towing abilities. If you frequently tow a caravan or heavy trailer, an upgraded turbo can make towing easier and reduce engine strain.

FAQs

Should I pair an engine tune with a turbo upgrade?

Yes, I always recommend ECU remapping as one of the most important parts of how to upgrade a turbo. When I do a custom 4×4 fitout, I look at the complete picture and how upgrades will affect other components.

Appropriate engine tuning ensures the igniting timing, boost pressure, and air-to-fuel ratio all complement the upgraded turbo.
